August (and April - July) 2004

After six month without any NA DX noted in the log book the new season has made
a good first impression! Equipment test August 16th resulted in PR-1660 on the overnite video
recording. Wire only 600 m after it was "attacked" by first a falling birch tree and then a moose.
August 26th the long wire pointing towards the US east coast had a service  and is now
1200 meters long again.

August 28th I did the first serious check in six months and the sound was quite OK.
Only a little static from the rain. Stations all over the MW band when I turned the radio on.
To my surprise conditions favoured WI / IL.  NL / NS was heard too but had a life of their own.
Caribbean and Venezuela  good at times too.

August 29th the background noice was not as "quiet" as the night before but now and then
The US was heard quite well.  Lots of unidentified and even a few on lower frequencies too.
The X-band was not too interesting this night.  LA heard after the NA faded away for the day.

August 30th was not very interesting. Quite a few stations from the Great Lakes  - but only for a
few seconds now and then. Good peaks but too short fade ins to identify most of the stations.
The ionosphere sounded like active most of the time.

August 31st was no good. The MW band was dead for most of the time but then a few seconds now and then a handful stations from ON/NY area  were heard. CBC-1230 and Greenland
570/650  had real fine signal long periods.  1230 best on Midwest antenna. CHFC probably.

1570  29.8  0226  XERF Ciudad Acuna   "XERF La Poderosa 1570 ..."  Q3-4 over a long period.  BOS
1600  28.8  0230  WLUZ Bayamon PR  QRK 4 at ID.  Many Puerto Ricans heard fine but UNID.  BOS
1620  28.8  0211  WDHP Frederiksted VI  very strong with storm warning and forecasts for US VI.  BOS

1640  28.8  0231  UNID SS  station with soft music non stop. Must have been the new Radio Juventus,
                               Rep. Dominicana. I did not wait for an ID. Problems with russian PTP.  BOS
