September 2002

Receivers now connected and tested. Wires needs some attention but works well.

Solar activity still much too high.  As of September 21st it looks/sounds better...

Quite a few follow up letters sent now. See QSL2002 for results...
Last winter's reports perhaps got lost after the September 11 attack or in the Anthrax hysteria.
Return percentage dropped a few %. I hope the mail handling has been normalized by now.

1-  2.9    Nothing on tape.
3.9        My videotape revealed fair reception on the highest frequencies at least.  I did no active
listening but  not too bad DX for a little more than two hours this night I guess.
4-16.9   Nothing.  A few days ruined by a proton disturbance. This plus high A-index etc.
17.9       Three hours of sporadic NA reception. Only short peaks of reportable strength. KNAX 1630
heard with SS preaching and ranchera type music. A weak Id on the hour, but too weak to be
readable. But later I can compare the signal with a better one for 100% ID I guess.
18.9        First night this season that I tried a little active DXing.  But turned out to be real bad. Only
Radio Corporacion 1380 from Chile at reportable strength. Lots of fine ID:s on the hour, but
I do not report LA:s so I went back to bed.
19-20.9  Nothing.
21.9        Two hours of distorted signals.  Nothing reportable, but still the first sign of  an upcoming
DX season!  Could be a few good days soon!
22.9        A normal five hour DX-night , but almost nothing heard for more than seconds. Lots of
stations but  barely readable or reportable.  Until I switched over to the prairie wire! Much
better signals there and much less disturbance from the Aurora.  But far from quiet
conditions. First Californians for the season and 1560 an few more real fine! Radio Disney
1680 too! But I did not stay to get an ID.  Soon....
23.9        Just like 21st and 22nd except for the hour after sunrise when signals became quite clear.
24.9        Very good now and then for several hours.
CJWI Montreal PQ 1610 now identified!
25.9        More than six hours of NA, but the noise floor too high for graveyarders to come through.
26.9        Strong signals for a few seconds but most of the time nothing. Puerto Rico alone on many
frequencies with good signal but I did not wait for any ID:s. Then suddenly NS or NY in
with great signal for a few seconds/minutes. Long periods with nothing readable.
27-28.9   Did not check. But fine conditions reported from all over Sweden on the 28th...
29-30.9   First days of  PAX21 expedition. See separate log.

North America (UTC)

The result of overnight video taping on 1630 and 1700 after start of season Aug. 29th plus a four hours of active listening.  Lots of weak and very distorted signals on the 21st. The Aurora only let each station pop up for a few seconds each and from any direction.  Mostly NA but a few LA:s too.  It would have been hard to find material for a reception report on any station heard!  But QRK 3 for a couple of seconds so some clear ID:s. Many frequencies with 3-4 stations but none readable.
