December 2001

The Protons were no major problem in December! But December 26th at around 0630 UTC
the MW died. Very slow recovery from a relatively low Proton Flux level after this.
Auroral activity was the main source of disturbance before Dec. 26th.  The month started
with a very interesting New York State opening on the 3rd but after that mostly weak and
varying signals from the east coast plus South America. December 6th a few weak stations
from western Canada/USA too.  After that I returned to the PAX12 tapes and only tured the
radios on a few minutes now and then. "Nothing" heard.

    1-2.12   Nothing of interest.
       3.12   Fine east coast opening at first (But I just listened for two hours from our local sunrise and on.
                 And did not record anything on my videos. I was not mentally prepared...)  and then mostly NY
                 state with a couple of new ones.  Same stations in Parkalompolo and northern Finland.
       4.12   A few stations from north east Canada.
  5-22.12   Nothing worth checking, but a few weak standard stations many of these mornings.

                 This expedition was planned to last December 23 - January 6th but was terminated
                 December 26th due to a protone shower.  Still a successful expedition! 
27-31.12   Nothing worth any attention.  Compare PAX15 log when available.

1160  3.12  0900  WMVI Mechanicville NY  w/ fine dual ID icluding a station on 900.  NOS format.
                              QSL has arrived already. Heard in Parkalompolo by SW about the same time. BOS
1190  3.12  0759  WLIB New York NY  meant this winter's WLIB report. Some day QSL will come. BOS
           3.12  0830  WOWO Fort Wayne IN  only a weak ID under the dominant WLIB BOS
1200  3.12 0858  CFGO Toronto ON  "The Team" and local announcements BOS
1290  3.12 0816  WKNE Keene NH  weak ID and slogan BOS
           3.12  0758  WNBF Binghamton NY  fair signal this NY opening. Several others on frequency.
                                A couple of clear "Radio Disney" identifications. Probably GA and not VA. BOS
           3.12  0806  CJBK London ON  the dominating station here after sunrise. BOS
           3.12  0933  WHIO Dayton OH  weak ID and time check BOS
1490  3.12  0837  +WICY Malone NY  surprised me with a fine ID and other reportable details! New for
                               Sweden but recently heard in Finland. Fine NY reception! Compare 1160. BOS

PAX13:  SW could not find any company this time so he decided to go by himself. And he
turned out lucky from the first day! At first fine west coast reception followed by the
fine NY skip on the 3rd and fine Alaska reception. The second week of his expedition
was not too great but signals every day. Weak and very unstable signals.
PAX14 with first listening December 23rd as we are two strange persons
going there instead of participating in the hysteric X-mas traditions. 
PAX15: From Dec.  27th LSD, PES and RÅM from the MRS Club of Stockholm.
At least one more expedition is planned for January/February sometime.
