September 2001

First half of September was no good! The solar activity has been
higher than expected but the geomagnetic activity about
expected or perhaps lower.  A tricky season ahead...

September 24th after a couple of days with fair reception from
North America  the 10 MeV Proton Flux hit the roof and all signals
disappeared not to come back for over three weeks!
Extreme duration of this event! Proton chocks normally only last
for a couple of days and it does not happen very often. This
disturbance is the longest lasting I have seen this solar cycle!
See October for more details!

PROTON FLUX PLOTS BELOW!

Scroll down!

2.9       Half a dozen NA:s around sunset over in America.  I was checking equipment so no ID noted.
Around our local sunrise Uruguay managed to spill over into my antennas that normally do not
pick up stations from that direction.
  3-6.9    Unattended all-night-videos monitoring 1600, 1640, 1660 and 1700.   Puerto Rico most of the
night on 1660! Both sports and music.  More professional style than last winter.   Puerto Rico
1600 also regular. Not as strong as 1660. Short fade ins on 1660 by NJ and on 1700 by FL.
  7.9        No listening/recording.
  8-9.9    Nothing interesting.
11.9       Best of the days I've checked.  (Perhaps September 7th was better?) I just listened until 2330
UTC and then taped four frequencies. So perhaps if I had only tuned in four other frequencies...
12.9       The night after the NYC Attack. - Listened a couple of hours. Around EST sunset a couple of
stations from the NY/DC-area were noted but not too good signals. Most stations noted with
regular programming but a few with talk. A disturbance early in the night and the only LA.
13-14.9  Bad reception. A few PR and east coast stations around our local sunrise.

15-23.9
PARKALOMPOLO EXPEDITION PAX10.

24.9        Not much heard here at home but fine signals in Parkalompolo according to A. Later this day
the Proton Flux reached record levels producing several PCA:s the next week.
25-30.9   No signals at all from the north west. See October page for the end of this disturbance.
