January 2001
Nothing extreme but a fair month over all. A couple of stations heard obviously having technical problems changing power/pattern. WLMC heard a couple of nights.
1.1 A few stations from the north east corner of North America heard with very strong signal. S-meter at S9+10 dB on most of them, but almost impossible to hear what was said. Severe distortion from the influence of the Aurora. 2-8.1 Similar signals as January 1st, but a little better on the 8th. 9.1 45 minutes of listening around sunrise and a few fine signals from the eastern half of USA. 10.1 Much like on the 9th but more Latin American interfence. A few Florida signals. 11-17.1 No time to listen but probably not much to hear. 18.1 The best day of this month with signals until the middle of the day! Selective NY-centred reception. Some NY stations very powerful. Some Latin QRM. 19.1 Nothing on my tapes for this night but around sunrise similar conditions as on the 18th. 20.1 Before midninght a few fine NF signals, like 800, 1210 etc. My video in the night recorded KAZP with very fine signal and only a little WTAW interference. Very good Colombia signals at sunrise. But my very selective antennas filtered most out and my ears and mind took care of the rest... 21.1 JOB and KUN here to catch a few new ones. They started listening at about 22 UTC on the 20th and sat here for 10 hours. First 5 hours gave nothing from NA but a couple of hours before sunrise they had a fair opening. I had a tough week and had to sleep. When I got up the fun was over. But I guess I did not miss anything... 22.1 Nothing heard. 23-26.1 No time to listen. But I guess nothing interesting was heard... 27.1 Too tired to check sunrise. My all-night-video indicates WLAM 1470 after 07 UTC.... 28.1 Venezuela plus a few strong east coast stations. VCR recording gave WLMC 1470. 29.1 Nothing. 30.1 Nothing until late in the evening. Then NF/NS. 31.1 At sunrise a few NF/NS plus a couple of standards from north east USA.
North America (UTC)
590 19.1 2211 VOCM St. John's NF fine for a while. The following night was not too good. BOS 620 9.1 0741 WTMJ Milwaukee WI faded out after a fine commercial. Gone after the ID BOS 650 31.1 0711 CKGA Gander NF with VOCM weather //740//710//590. BOS 700 20.1 0701 WLW Cincinnati OH with traffic information. Snowy roads.. BOS 790 18.1 0702 CFNW Port aux Choix NF w/ a fine "CFCB" ID when I was looking for NB. BOS 9.1 0713 CFCW Camrose AB dominant here despite more easterly conditions BOS 800 10.1 0659 CKLW Windsor ON only fair this time. Can come real strong at times. BOS 30.1 2302 VOWR St. John's NF fine ID after having read obituaries. BOS 820 9.1 0707 CHAM Hamilton ON "Hamilton's 820 Cham" BOS 880 9.1 0721 WCBS New York NY w/ ID and "your lucky numbers..." BOS 890 9.1 0705 WLS Chicago IL "WLS Chicagoland's Weather" BOS 920 1.1 2341 CJCH Halifax NS very strong but hard to copy. QSA 4 but QRK 1-2 because of almost 100% distortion of the sound! Because of the Northern lights! BOS 930 21.1 0641 CFBC St John NB one of only three stations identified this morning by me. My friends JOB and KUN visited me this night/morning and they heard and reported a few stations each. They were satisfied with the result (Almost.) but I thought this was a real dull morning... BOS 960 31.1 0701 CHNS Sydney NS "Oldies 96". Fair signal. BOS 1000 28.1 0104 CKBW Bridgewater NS Fine ID in a fine fade in. Country music. BOS 1180 20.1 0729 WHAM Rochester NY fine at ID. BOS 1230 18.1 0732 WSBB New Smyrna Beach FL only a weak but clear ID and NOS music. A little earlier a fairly clear "WCMC" ID but the AGC of my Icom IC-R75 made it impossible to say 100%. If this had been heard on an JRC or Loewaw receiver that had not happened! The AGC is the weak point of the R75 I think. At least when signals are weary weak and there is slop from Europeans close in frequency. But then my receiver only has the standard filters supplied. BOS 1260 1.1 0107 CKHJ Fredericton NB now again! Compare December log. Local weather, prog. title etc. Q 2-3 BOS 1.1 0116 WKMI Boston MA "Radio Disney AM 1260 Boston." BOS 1270 18.1 0806 CJCB Sydney NS did not allow any US to come through this day.. BOS 1290 18.1 0831 CHRM Matane PQ Fine jingle. Identifying FF stns is as easy as most EE . . BOS 18.1 0806 WKNE Keene NH at last! Not very strong but a clear slogan, inclusing the station call letters, in a station program promo made a report possible! New to me. BOS 18.1 0906 WNBF Binghampton NY came clear one hour after WKNE above. Not very common. My earlier reports did not result in any QSL so now I try again... BOS 1380 21.1 0741 KRKO Everett WA identified just before reception ended this morning. BOS 1460 18.1 0754 WGNA Albany NY w/ a WGNA-FM identifiication just like they always have... BOS 1470 28.1 0537 WLMC Georgetown SC with a clear "Joy 1470" and lots of Gospel music. Fully identified before in Sweden by LAB and SW earlier in January! BOS 18.1 0717 WKAP Allentown PA with two ID:s, one of whicgh was very fine! Obviously heard before in Sweden but that was long ago. + SW in November. Rare catch! BOS 1480 1.1 0000 WSAR Fall River MA fair ID. Selective conditions and heavy Aurora Borealis. Also noted on the 19th. BOS 19.1 0734 WADR Remsen NY a nice surprise!
